The ICAD system is a leading solution for measuring NOx emission factors (mg/kWh) from ships, addressing the need for water and air pollution control. With the following outstanding advantages, the ICAD system ensures high efficiency and accuracy:
-
- Remote measurement of NOX emission factors (mg/kWh) for single ships
- Fast and simple measurement set-up, robust and precise instrumentation
- Direct measurements of NOx and CO2 stationary near water ways (on bridges, shore lines) or on mobile platforms (e.g., chasing vessels)
Product
ICAD NO2-NOx-NO Analyzer SERIES 210DL
ICAD NOx monitors deliver precise and rapid measurements of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2). Independent of calibration gases, ICAD instruments are versatile, suitable for both stationary laboratory and mobile applications (cars, ships, drones). With an optional built-in CO2 sensor, ICAD enables real-time on-road emissions monitoring using plume-chasing techniques.
ICAD Advantages
- Precise NOx measurements: sub ppb sensitivity, high sampling rate
- Direct NO2 detection: free of cross sensitivities
- NO2 calibration gas not required: intrinsic NO2 calibration by molecular absorption cross section data
- Mobile and robust configuration available: temperature stabilized, IP67 rating, light weight, compact, low power consumption, optional battery operation
- Optional CO2 extension for emission measurements (e.g. automotive NOx emission factors)
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi, LAN, RS232, graphical user interface included
Overview
In the context of the increasingly severe impact of emissions from waterway transportation on the marine environment, the measurement and control of NOx and CO2 emissions from ships have become essential. The ICAD system offers a modern and efficient solution, providing accurate and rapid measurements of ship emissions, significantly contributing to environmental protection and compliance with international emission regulations.
Key Features of the ICAD System
Direct Measurement of NOx and CO2
The ICAD system is designed to directly measure NOx and CO2 from ship exhaust at various locations, such as near water bodies, on bridges, riverbanks, or on mobile platforms like patrol boats. This allows environmental management agencies to collect emission data flexibly and accurately.
High Accuracy and Fast Response Time
ICAD provides highly accurate NOx measurements with a response time of just a few seconds, ensuring that the collected data is timely and reliable. With an optional integrated CO2 sensor, the system can precisely and thoroughly determine ship emission factors.
Durable and Energy-Efficient Device
The ICAD device is built with a robust structure, meeting IP64 standards, making it resistant to harsh outdoor weather conditions. Furthermore, this system is energy-efficient and requires low calibration, reducing operational and maintenance costs, ideal for field measurement applications.
Flexibility in Measurement Locations
The ICAD system can be deployed at various locations, such as riverbanks, piers, or bridges over waterways. Additionally, the system can be installed on mobile platforms like patrol boats, allowing for the measurement of NOx emissions from moving ships, providing maximum flexibility in collecting emission data.
Combining ICAD Data with AIS
A noteworthy feature of the ICAD system is its ability to combine measurement data with local AIS (Automatic Identification System) receivers. AIS provides information about the position, speed, and size of ships, helping to accurately identify the emission factors from specific ships. This is especially useful in areas with high ship traffic, enabling regulatory agencies to monitor and control emissions efficiently and accurately.
System Setup
The ICAD system can be used to measure NOx and CO2 emissions from ships when placed near waterways. This measurement depends on local meteorological conditions, so the installation location should be chosen to align with the wind direction. Ideal locations include:
-
- Riverbanks
- Landing platforms at ports
- Bridges over waterways
For example, the ICAD system can be placed on bridges over waterways as shown in Figure 1, with the sample conduit positioned above the water surface to measure emissions from passing ships.
Measurement Process
- The ICAD system performs measurements with high accuracy and a time resolution of a few seconds.
- An optional internal CO2 sensor can be integrated to provide more precise measurements of ship emissions.
- The NOx and CO2 emissions from nearby ships will be directly measured by the system.
Identifying Emission Ships
Assigning the measured emission streams to specific ships is done by detecting increases in CO2 compared to background levels.
Combining data from the ICAD system with local AIS receivers helps identify ship information such as location, speed, and size, allowing for the assignment of emission factors to individual ships.

Mobile Applications
The ICAD system can also operate on mobile platforms such as monitoring vessels, using a 12V power supply, to measure NOx emission factors from ships while they are in motion. This method is similar to the “plume chasing” technique currently used to measure emissions from road vehicles.
For example, law enforcement vessels can use the ICAD system to monitor target ships and measure NOx emissions directly while in transit.
