SPECIALIZED pCO2 SENSOR FOR OCEANOGRAPHIC RESEARCH
Monitoring air-sea CO₂ exchange is essential for assessing global climate change. The CO2-ATM Pro™ sensor was developed to meet rigorous requirements for accuracy and stability during long-term monitoring in harsh ocean environments. This product has been selected as the air-sea pCO₂ measurement device for the Coastal and Global Scale Nodes of the U.S. Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI).
System Components
1. Dual-Media Sensing System: A robust design comprising a CO2-Pro™ sensor mounted below the buoy for underwater measurements, connected to a NEMA-rated enclosure mounted on the buoy for air intake. Alternating measurements provide accurate data for reliable calculations of surface exchange flux.
2. Anti-Biofouling Membrane Technology: Features a patented membrane interface that provides superior resistance to biofouling, ensuring reliable, long-term operation.
3. Automatic Zeroing Mechanism: The internal auto-zeroing feature corrects for drift, maintaining a stable, long-term baseline without the need for complex post-processing.
4. Controller & Data System: Includes an integrated internal data logger and controller with 2 GB of Flash memory, supporting real-time data output for direct transmission to central systems.
Applications
- Research on surface CO₂ exchange flux.
- Long-term ocean pCO₂ monitoring.
- Open ocean (oceanographic) research.
- Coastal CO₂ exchange flux monitoring.
Monitoring & Analytical Capabilities
1. Unparalleled Accuracy: Sensors are calibrated to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) traceable standards. Combining atmospheric pressure and humidity measurements with stabilized probe temperature delivers superior accuracy.
2. Versatility: The specialized design allows for easy integration into buoy monitoring systems or continuous shipboard pump systems.
3. High Reliability: Engineered specifically for harsh environments, ensuring stable operation over long periods with minimal maintenance costs.
