Strict monitoring and precise assistance during vessel berthing and departure are critical to ensuring maritime safety, minimizing collision risks, and optimizing port operations. Recently, Reecotech completed the deployment and installation of the Safe and Efficient Optimized Vessel Berthing and Departure Monitoring and Support System at the Petro Vung Tau Fuel Terminal (Hai Linh Port). This system delivers real-time information and timely decision support to pilots, shipmasters, and port operating staff.
Challenges
- Collision Risk: The possibility of a vessel striking the berth due to inappropriate speed or excessive approach angle can result in asset damage, operational disruptions, and significant economic losses.
- Variable Environmental Conditions: Strong winds, high waves, complex currents, and limited visibility substantially increase the difficulty and risk of ship handling, demanding accurate, instantaneous environmental data.
- Limitations in Real-Time Data: A lack of continuous, precise information on vessel position, speed, and weather conditions can lead to delayed or imprecise decisions—especially critical for large-tonnage vessels.
- Specialized Safety Requirements: In fuel terminals, compliance with the highest explosion-proof safety standards (e.g., ATEX) is mandatory for all equipment operating within the facility.
Comprehensive Solution for a Modern Seaport
Reecotech’s advanced technological solution integrates core components to address these challenges effectively:
- Berthing Support Module: Employs high-precision German laser measurement equipment to continuously monitor vessel distance, speed, and approach angle in real time. Sensors are housed in ATEX-certified explosion-proof enclosures and mounted on dedicated frames capable of withstanding harsh marine conditions, ensuring maximum reliability and safety.
- Meteorological and Hydrological Monitoring Module: Integrates reputable sensors for wind speed, wind direction, water level, and current measurements. Continuously updates environmental data, providing essential situational awareness to support accurate and safe vessel navigation.
- VnEmisoft-BAS Control Software: Serves as the intelligent control center via a user-friendly web-based interface. Displays all measured parameters and issues immediate alarms if vessels exceed predefined safety thresholds. Archives and replays historical berthing/departure events and offers advanced data analytics tools to support decision-making and optimize port operations.
Results Achieved at Hai Linh Port
Reecotech’s Vessel Berthing and Departure Monitoring and Support System has demonstrated outstanding performance at the Petro Vung Tau Fuel Terminal (Hai Linh Port). Notably, it successfully supported the berthing and unloading of the vessel Blue Dragon 1 (84,363 DWT) by providing the following key real-time parameters:
- Berthing Speed (m/s): Precise data on vessel approach or departure velocity, enabling pilots to adjust speed optimally.
- Contact/Inclination Angle (°): Monitors the vessel’s approach angle relative to the berth to ensure a perfectly aligned approach and prevent side collisions.
- Operating Water Level (m): Provides the current water depth, crucial for calculating safe draft and avoiding grounding.
- Current Speed & Direction (m/s, °): Delivers flow data to allow pilots to compensate for current forces and maintain a stable course.
Full compliance with ATEX explosion-proof standards further underscores the commitment to absolute safety, particularly within the sensitive environment of an oil-and-gas terminal.
